Sein Ruf bittet Liebende, die voneinander getrennt sind, sich wieder zu vereinen. Der Pfau ist ein Symbol für Anmut, Schönheit, Liebe und Mystik und wird oft als Begleittier von Göttern und Göttinnen dargestellt. Die Legende sagt, dass der Pfau aus den Federn des mythischen Vogels Garuda geschaffen wurde. Der Pfau ist durch einen Parlamentserlass als Indiens „Nationalvogel“ geschützt.

Of the thousands of different kinds of birds living on the Indian subcontinent, the Blue Indian Peacock (pavo christatus) is the most magnificent. The peacock is a symbol of joy because when the sky gets dark with rainclouds and the Monsoon arrives the peacock starts to dance to welcome the rain. The rain relieves the earth from the hot and arid summer months and brings new fertility to the land. Its cry announcing the beginning of the rainy season also invites the lovers to unite – it is a symbol of beauty, grace and love. Its graceful movements are depicted in countless folk and classical dances. The theme of the peacock appears also in literature and painting where it often accompanies gods and goddesess. In fact, it is a protected species and officially declared by the parliament as India´s National Bird.
